We value progressive organizations and ideas that support fundamental civil rights and civil liberties. We provide grants to organizations that support open dialogue on topics that often provoke diverse and divisive responses from individuals. Because we value robust First Amendment rights, we embrace organizations that seek to alter public policies and the discussion on controversial topics like drugs, sex, free expression, and the rights of the individual in an open and democratic society.
Our work is accomplished mainly through small targeted grants that help specific United States-based nonprofit programs achieve new levels of success. This model of philanthropy has been integral to realizing our mission since the establishment of the foundation in 1964. We make grants from our headquarters in Chicago, Illinois.
